Summary

Responsible for supporting all activities related to the acquisition of tissue and blood samples from oncology surgery patients for the purpose of genetic and other testing. Critical to this position is developing key relationships with various departments and active surgeons. This position is responsible for review, implementation and completion of generic and specific protocols for sample acquisition. Responsible for acting as liaison for all collaboration in the academic partner tissue program. Responsible for the day-to-day management of the surgical kit and the logistics of kit requisition, deployment and delivery to all participating institutions over the course of the RO1 grant. Contributes to the data management processes of the grant. Responsible for demonstrating professional demeanor and maintaining confidentiality in all interactions with both internal and external contacts. Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Interface wth patients, hospital staff, and physicians to gain their support of the research project to ensure project goals are met. Develop strong relationships with pathology, histology, ipeating room and surgical departments.
  • Interface with the operating room staff to assure procurement of diagnostic cancer tissue and establish a system whereby staff ensures the CRC is aware that a tissue specimen is available for procurement.
  • Exercise independent judgment starting with the implementation phase of a study, start-up, study enrollment, maintenance of the study with subject management, data entry, and study closure.
  • Conduct the informed consent process directly with all patients in a highly standardized manner for the procurement of extra (to be discarded) cancer tissue, normal tissue, and/or a blood sample. When required, coordinate the pathologist frozen section evaluation to identify extra tissue, which would otherwise be discarded, then follow protocol for freezing within the appropriate timeframe.
  • Procure tissue and/or blood sample from the patient and place in the appropriate container or collection tube and process according to protocol. De-identification of all samples and medical records prior to shipment will be completed while maintaining a key in a secure location. Assure shipment of all tissue and blood samples via defined requirements per protocol.
  • Obtain basic clinical data on the patient from oncology and other sources at the time of surgery or pre-surgery, including patient's de-identified surgical pathology report. Obtain annual clinical follow-up information including stage of disease, possible recurrence, prescription and outcome as required by individual protocols.
  • Act as liaison between Prinicipal Investigators and all internal and external contracts. Act as primary contact for academic partner tissue acquisition program. Conduct physician and stff in-services and training sessions as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records for all sample collection and participate in site audits by regulatory agencies as necessary.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and performs other duties as assigned or directed in order to enhance the overall team efforts of the organization.
  • Completes assigned goals.


Requirements, Preferences and Experience

Education

Preferred: Knowledge of FDA, GCP and ICH Guidelines regarding clinical research preferred.

Minimum: Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite, Internet Explorer and general office equipment. Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills.

Experience

Preferred: Clinical research experience preferred.

Minimum: Minimum of 2-4 years direct experience in nursing or operating room setting. .
