Summary

Performs and/or supervises the preparation of cytology specimens; screens cytology smears for atypical or malignant cells and other abnormal findings; maintains files and records of slides. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Provides acceptable microscopic interpretation for NonGyn cases per pathologists' overview and for Gyn cases per established threshold values. Participates in the CAP's cytopathology educational activities.
  • Adheres to established specimen collection and handling policies and procedures in order to ensure the highest level of specimen integrity possible.
  • Participates in QA activities including 10% rescreen of Gyn negatives, workload recording, observes workload/slide limits, and monitors results for errors.
  • Follows established procedures for result entry, report and material release, and slide filing to ensure the integrity of patient medical records per regulatory and departmental requirements.
  • Operates and maintains equipment according to established policies. Participates in inventory control.
  • Review and follow policies and procedures for compliance with regulatory agency requirements for accreditation, as noted by the supervisor.
  • Demonstrates commitment to personal career growth and competency, including completion of all departmental requirements.


Requirements, Preferences and Experience

Education

Minimum: Bachelor's Degree Cytotechnology Required, or Bachelor's Degree in Related Field from Accredited School of Cytotechnology Required, and 1 year Training in a School of Cytotechnology-Accredited Required.

Experience

Minimum: No experience Required.

Licensure, Registration, Certification

Minimum: License/Certification/Registries (valid for the State of MS): Cytotechnologist (CT) - ASCP Certification Required, or Cytotechnologist (CT) - ASCP Certification within 6 Months of Employment Required.
