Summary

Identifies the best method for retrieving blood samples. Responsible for verifying patient identification and explaining sampling procedures to patients. Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks. Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic techniques, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of pre-analytic variables for laboratory tests by using appropriate methods for collecting, labeling and transporting biological specimens for laboratory analysis. Also, recognize common patient situations and procedural or technical problems and the appropriate courses of action.
  • Documents quality control appropriately by taking and reporting corrective action as needed, using comment codes correctly.
  • Applies knowledge of available resources for gathering information related to blood collection and test procedures, including using computerized information systems and specimen collection lists.
  • Demonstrates commitment to personal career growth and competency, including completion of all departmental requirements.
  • Assists with inventory and supply management as needed.
  • Performs other duties as requested following training.


Requirements, Preferences and Experience

Education

Preferred: Completion of Phlebotomy Course-Accredited Preferred. Additional Education Requirements: 100 sticks at a clinical site preferred.

Minimum: High School Diploma or Equivalent Required.

Experience

Minimum: 1 year Healthcare/Medical-Phlebotomy Required.

Special Skills

Preferred: Skill in communicating clearly and effectively using Standard English in written, oral and verbal format to achieve high productivity and efficiency. Skill to write legibly and record information accurately as necessary to perform job duties. Computer skills.

Minimum: Basic computer literacy.

Training

Preferred: Training as acquired in an approved phlebotomy training program
