Summary

Baptist Health Science University's College of Osteopathic Medicine (BUCOM) Research Laboratory Director will oversee the daily operation of the BUCOM research laboratories and will provide hands-on support to BUCOM faculty and student research projects within the laboratories. This individual will be responsible for SOPs, equipment, operations, policies, and research laboratory compliance. Scientific writing, as required for funding proposals and peer-reviewed articles, is also an important part of the position. The Director will also be responsible for laboratory supply and reagent ordering, receiving, storage, and inventory as well as scheduling routine laboratory equipment testing, calibration, and maintenance. The ideal candidate will also have experience in basic bench laboratory techniques such as (but not limited to) real-time PCR, SDS-PAGE, and sterile cell culture. The candidate should be adept at setting priorities, time management, and training of student researchers under the director of faculty researchers. This position will report directly to the Associate Dean of Research, responsible for 8 hours/day, 5 days/week. Incumbents may occasionally be subject to hours beyond the normal workday.

Responsibilities

1.Manage purchasing, maintenance and handling of research laboratory equipment and supplies in compliance with all federal, state and local regulations. Analyze operational costs and scheduling and lead and implement efficiency improvements.

2.Design, organize, manage and carry out research independently. Provide hands-on technical and bench research support to BUCOM faculty and students. Formulate research methods.

3.Analyze research hypotheses using controlled investigations, experiments and/or trials.

4.Develop or collaborate in the development of new techniques and methods.

5.Evaluate current and future technologies.

6.Oversee quality control and safety programs to ensure that all laboratory activities comply with regulatory aspects of research program.

7.Develop and review strategic operational plans, set priorities to ensure task completion, implement, monitor and achieve annual goal for projects/program.

Requirements, Preferences and Experience

Minimum:

Master's degree in a health sciences field

Three (3) years research laboratory technical experience

Excellent time management, organizational skills, and critical thinking capability

Strong administrative, organizational and communication skills

Desired:

Master's degree in a health sciences field

Five (5) years research laboratory technical experience and three (3) research laboratory management

Broad range of research laboratory skills including (but not limited to) sterile mammalian cell culture, transfection, bacterial transformation, gel electrophoresis, polymerase chain reaction and others

Three (3) years' experience with laboratory equipment and analysis software, including GraphPad Prism
